AFAIK, it works like this:
If someone is on: | Mastodon | (streams) or Forte (thread started on Mastodon) | (streams) or Forte (thread started on Hubzilla/(streams)/Forte) |
---|
their reply goes to: | everyone whom they mention + their own followers + whomever any of these boosts their reply to | the thread starter | the thread starter |
they automatically mention visibly: | whom they reply to + everyone whom whomever they reply to has visibly mentioned | nobody if they reply to a post; whom they reply to if they reply to a comment | nobody if they reply to a post; whom they reply to if they reply to a comment |
they automatically shadow-mention: | whom they reply to + everyone whom whomever they reply to has visibly mentioned | whom they reply to + everyone whom whomever they reply to has shadow-mentioned | nobody if they reply to a post; whom they reply to if they reply to a comment |
they get replies: | (pushed) if they're shadow-mentioned, or if they follow whoever replies, or if they follow someone who boosts a reply | (pulled) from the thread starter | (pulled) from the thread starter |
In other words, the thread works like this from @
Bill Statler's reply on:
- Bill Statler replies to Soh Kam Yung's comment.
As Bill Statler is on (streams), the comment goes past Soh Kam Yung straight to the thread starter, sjvn.
But as this thread started on Mastodon (sjvn is on Mastodon), Bill Statler's reply shadow-mentions Soh Kam Yung because it's a reply to Soh Kam Yung's comment. And it shadow-mentions sjvn due to being the thread starter and shadow-mentioned (and visibly mentioned; Mastodon always does either both or neither) in Soh Kam Yung's comment.
sjvn and Soh Kam Yung' are notified about the reply because they were shadow-mentioned.
Aho does not see this reply due to not having been mentioned. - Level 98 replies to Bill Statler's reply.
Bill Statler is automatically both shadow-mentioned and visibly mentioned because Mastodon always automatically both shadow-mentions and visibly mentions whover is replied to.
sjvn was added as a mention manually. Mastodon only goes looking for visible mentions in posts/comments/replies/DMs when adding mentions to replies because it blindly assumes that shadow-mentions and visible mentions always occur together, because they do so in a purely Mastodon thread.
The reply goes to Bill Statler and sjvn as well as Level 98's followers.
Bill Statler actually sees this reply because it is pulled from sjvn.
sjvn sees this reply due to having been mentioned.
Soh Kam Yung does not see this reply due to not having been mentioned unless they follow Level 98.
Aho does not see this reply due to not having been mentioned unless they follow Level 98. - Soh Kam Yung replies to Bill Statler's reply.
Bill Statler is automatically both shadow-mentioned and visibly mentioned because Mastodon always automatically both shadow-mentions and visibly mentions whover is replied to.
Nobody else is mentioned because Soh Kam Yung couldn't be bothered to mention anyone else manually.
The reply goes to Bill Statler as well as Soh Kam Yung's followers.

sjvn does not see this reply due to not having been mentioned unless they follow Soh Kam Yung.
